A Scape for Water
워터스케이프(Waterscape)는 ‘물로써 그린 물 그림’으로 물(水)은 작품의 소재, 주된 기법, 그 속에 함축된 의미 모두를 담는 그릇이다. 나는 감상자로 하여금 물은 곧 생명이며, 본디 물 자체인 우리의 본성을 흔들어 깨워 존재의 원형을 일깨우는 물질이며, 나아가 모든 우주 만물을 하나의 공통체로 연결할 수 있는 소통과 융합의 매개체라는 메시지를 전하고자 한다.
흐르는 강물은 곧 나의 내면에 흐르는 강물이다. 물은 내면으로 통하는 매개이며, 나는 물이라는 메타포를 통해 현존재에 대한 고민과 존재의 원형적 모습, 그리고 우리네 삶에 대한 보편적 통찰을 시각적으로 고찰한다.이러한 나의 물 그림은 감각적 실재의 풍경으로부터 관념적 실재의 내면풍경으로 확장되어 보는 이의 시각에 따라 다양한 해석의 여지를 남긴다. 예를 들어, 바다처럼, 산처럼, 기의 흐름처럼, 에너지의 파동처럼, 빛의 다발처럼.
비결정적이고 가변적인 물의 특성을 극대화하기 위하여 나는 단순히 물을 그리는 것이 아닌 ‘물로써 물을 그리는’ 독특한 작화방식을 취한다. 먼저 바탕화면 전체를 흑연으로 도포한 후에 에어건에 탑재한 물을 분사하여 그리고자 하는 형상을 ‘물로 닦아내고 비워서’ 그린다. 결과, 그려진 형상은 다름 아닌 물이 지나간 흔적이며 허(虛)의 공간으로 남는다. 이는 ‘허’ 중시적 동양사상을 강조한 ‘허실상생’(虛實相生)의 조형적 구현이며, 육안으로 보이는 현상세계 너머 본질의 세계를 중시한 표현기법이기도 하다. 이렇게 물로써 물을 그리는 것은 주와 객의 경계를 소거함으로써 창작자는 물론 감상자로 하여금 물아일체의 경지를 좀 더 실감나게 하고, 전반적으로 부드럽고 섬세하고 투명한 시각적 효과와 더불어 내면적이고 명상적인 분위기를 자아낸다.
나는 감상자로 하여금 나의 워터스케이프를 통해 흐르는 물속에 빠져 자신의 내면에 흐르는 강과 조우하길 바란다.

The meaning of WATERSCAPE?
WATERSCAPE : Meet me in the flowing water
Waterscape is a series of "paintings executed with water and featuring water". Water is the vessel containing all: subject matter, main technique, and connotations. I intend to convey to viewers the messages that water is life, and it awakens the archetype of our existence, stimulating our nature. It is the medium of communication and fusion that can bring all things in the universe together into one community.
Running water flows in my inner world. Water is an element flowing into the inner side. Through the metaphor for water I present visual insights into my anxiety about existence, the original form of existence, and our universal life. My water painting demonstrate an expansion from sensuous, real scenes to ideal innerscapes and opens up various interpretations depending on each viewer's viewpoint; it can be seen as the sea, a mountains, a flow or wave of energy, or a ray of light.
I have adopted a unique painterly facture. I paint water with water to maximize the variable attributes of water. After applying graphite to the whole ground, I depict the images I want to portray by erasing and emptying parts of the ground by injecting water with an air gun. The resulting images are traces of water and empty space. The work is a modeling realization of the mutual coexistence of emptiness and reality underlining the Oriental thought. It puts importance on emptiness and the expressive techniques of underlining the world of true nature, beyond the world of phenomena visible to the naked eyes. Painting water with water makes appreciators as well as creators realize the oneness of self and things by deleting the boundary between subject and object. It may also provoke and internal meditative atmosphere alongside delicate and transparent visual effects.
It's my wish that viewers may encounter the river flowing in their inner world through my Waterscape series.
