워터스케이프 Waterscape 는 ‘물 水로서 그린 물 物’의 풍경을 의미한다. 나는 물을 통해 존재와 세계의 실체를 통찰하고 이를 실제 흐르는 물을 매질로 삼아 직관적이고 감각적인 산물로서 시각적으로 발현하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 물은 모든 워터스케이프 연작의 소재, 주된 표현기법, 그리고 그 안에 함축된 의미 모두를 담는 하나의 그릇이다. 물을 분사하여 강한 수압의 차로 바탕색을 ‘지우고 씻어내는 나만의 고유한 조형방식을 창안하고 이를 '워터 드로잉' 이라고 명명하였다. 이는 내용에 부합하는 형식의 구현이라는 나의 예술관에 기초한 것이다. 나는 끊임없이 흐르는 물로 상象을 그림으로써 삶과 예술, 존재와 세계 사이의 간극을 소거하고 물 자체가 지닌 속성 (운동성, 변화성, 정화성, 융합성)에 기반한 새로운 미적 감감의 세계를 탐구한다.
송창애(b. 1972, 서울, 한국)는 현재 파주에 살며 파주를 기반으로 활동하는 현대미술가다. 1995년에는 숙명여자대학교에서 한국화과를 졸업하고, 첫 MFA 학위를 받았다. 이후 2008년에는 미국 오레곤 대학교에서 페인팅 및 드로잉 전공으로 두 번째 MFA 학위를 취득했으며, 2012년에는 홍익대학교 동양화과 박사학위를 수여하였다. 송창애 작가는 한국 예술위원회, Art & Tech, Seoul, Korea(2021, 2022, 2023)에서 Art & Technology Convergence_Type1, 2, 3; 서울로 미디어캔버스의 네이처 프로젝트(2021); 서울문화재단과 한국문화예술위원회의 예술창작 및 시각예술 지원금(2011); 미국 뉴욕의 Pollock-Krasner 재단 보조금(2011); 그리고 Anderson Ranch Artists-in-Residence Program: Full Fellowships in Colorado, USA(2009) 등에서 지원금을 받은 바 있다. 또한 그녀의 작품은 1998년 과천 국립현대미술관에서 열린 제17회 대한민국미술대전에서 한국화 부문 1위를 수상하며, 국립현대미술관, 영은미술관, 제주현대미술관, 용인세브란스병원, 타코마미술관, 미국 워싱턴 및 ACRS(미국 워싱턴의 Asian Counseling and Referral Service)에서 작품을 소장하고 있다.
Artist Song Chang-Ae explores the interaction between water and matter through the movement and waves of water, which she expresses through her unique painting technique called "water drawing." She created the "Waterscape" series through this process and is currently expanding the scope of her creative work and communication through the "Water Odyssey" project, which attempts to merge media and genres. Through a long period of focusing on the movement, waves, and resonance of water, as well as an intuitive and natural creative process, Song Chang-Ae has acquired an understanding of the aesthetics and form of water. Based on this, she is exploring the fundamental principles and interrelationships of life from a fluid dynamics perspective. Song Chang-Ae uses a tripartite view to handle binary oppositional relationships and seeks to uncover the hidden source of the "O" through the material and temporal properties of water. She aims to investigate the secret of the lost "O" in modern society, making it the ultimate goal of her self-existence and art.
Waterscape refers to a scenic portrayal of 'water as water objects'. Through the medium of water, I have endeavored to gain insight into the essence of existence and reality, which I express visually as an intuitive and sensory product. Water, as a container, holds within it the materials, primary expression techniques, and implicit meanings of all my Waterscape series. My unique formative method, Water Drawing, involves the use of water pressure to 'erase and wash' the background color. I have named this method based on my artistic belief in the realization of a form that matches its content. Through drawing images with constantly flowing water, I aim to bridge the gap between life and art, existence and the world, and explore a new realm of aesthetic experiences based on the inherent properties of water itself, including its mobility, variability, purification, and fusion.
Chang Ae Song (b. 1972, Seoul, Korea) is a contemporary artist based in Paju, Korea. She received her BFA in Korean Painting (1995) and her first MFA (1997) from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. In 2008, she earned her second MFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Oregon in Oregon, USA, where she was also a recipient of the School of Architecture & Allied Arts Dean’s Graduate Fellowship in Art. She completed her Ph.D. in Oriental Painting at Hong Ik University in Seoul, Korea in 2012. Song has received numerous grants and fellowships, including Art & Technology Convergence_Type1, 2, 3 from Korea Arts Council, Art & Tech, Seoul, Korea (2021, 2022, 2023); the Nature Project from Seoullo Media Canvas in Seoul, Korea (2021); the Grant for Arts Creation & Visual Arts from the Seoul Foundation for Arts & Culture and Arts Council Korea in Seoul, Korea (2011); the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in New York, USA (2011); and the Anderson Ranch Artists-in-Residence Program: Full Fellowships in Colorado, USA (2009), among others. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the 1st Prize in Korean painting at the 17th Grand Art Exhibition of Korea at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Kwachon, Korea (1998).
